Seems like the same story as last year...and the year before...

Thought it was interesting to compare to their Aug/Sep/Oct forecast issued in late March. Similar profile, but with more certainty.

Actually not true if you look at the data. The patterns are quite different. For perspective, we had a minimal wildfire season last year in southern UT.

Maybe mix-up in the msg. I was referring to last year's fire map as similar: CA/West Coast, AK and SW US having a lot of fires. Canada seems spared so far. Can't remember a time CA wasn't on fire.

I posted climate map from this year (March 21, 2024). Temp and precip patterns look similar to the June 20, 2024 map so just saying they got the general trend right 3 months ago.

Interesting to see precip outlook from 2023. Had a bunch of 3-4 day storms roll through the Tetons and Winds while I was there late Aug/mid-Sept.

Climate trends still for hotter, drier conditions this summer too. Hope those fires in Oregon and California don't ruin the views on your Teton Wilderness trip. Might be harder to spot a griz. :oops:
 
I just came out of the SEKI (between LA and San Fran) and there was no sign of smoke up high, hopefully that will be true for other parts of the west. But, it was hot as hell and afternoon thunderstorms seem likely to start a lot of fires.

Expect more smoke from a bunch of new lightning-caused fires in Canada. As reported in today's WaPo:

Alberta is near the epicenter of the fires. As of Wednesday, the government there reported 136 ongoing wildfires, with four being “of note.” Northeastern portions of the province are also blanketed in unhealthy to hazardous air as smoke fills the skies. Some of the fire complexes in Alberta have scorched nearly 300,000 acres (120,000 hectares).

British Columbia reports 176 active wildfires, largely in the remote north near the border with Alberta. Some have forced evacuations. Significant blazes are also ongoing west of Edmonton and northwest of Calgary, which may impact their air quality.

Anyone know how bad the Southern Winds are right now? I've been checking that smoke map daily, and it consistently looks somewhat smokier up there than down here in CO (which itself has been smoky lately), but I'm not sure exactly how bad it is. Is it hazy/smoky enough that I should head elsewhere a week from now? (I hate backpacking when the air quality is poor, and will drive to a different state if needed for cleaner air). If anyone else happens to be up there this week or next week, please post some details/photos!
 
The WRM FB page has recent posts on this - mostly variable - some days bad - others great. Pictures I've seen lately vary good/bad as well.

Was just in the southern Winds last weekend - was hazy, but not too bad. Seems like it got a little worse through the week, but like @OldBill says it's been pretty variable.

I'm headed back (north side this time) tomorrow and hoping for a little luck w/ the weather, but we shall see. A buddy in Pinedale says it's been raining, so maybe that'll relieve things a bit.
